After being in my new roles for two months, I realized that I am not excited about it for the following reasons:
l Less visibilities than my prior role
l Less exposures than my prior role
l Not much room to develop the skills that I would like to develop: presentation skills and strategic meeting brainstorm.
l My manager doesn’t pass along any information what she got from the higher up meeting. In my prior company, VP of the department keeps us posted about what’s going on. My current boss even doesn’t pass along the news regarding the human resource change.
But this position has some benefits:
l Flexible: work at home three days a week. I have 2 kids, one is 3 and the other is 1. The older one is in daycare. My mother-in-law is helping out with the younger one now.
l Manager is not difficult to deal with. But she seems not very organized. She likes to work on the things in the last minute. She is kind of new at her role, only one year experience in this function. But she has 11 years experience in another area within the same company.
l Nationwide opportunity. If I am not happy with my role, there are many opportunities without the geographic restrain. It means that you can work in any company office.
People will ask why I have accepted the offer. I thought the position will be at least as challenge as what I had before. It paid better and the tile is better. She didn’t reveal all the information at the interview.
Now, I saw one internal opportunity within the same company. The position is at the same job level, but with more responsibilities. Also, I would like to exposure to different function and different products. When I apply the position in a new company, normally they would consider my past experiences. So I got into my current role. I would like to give it a try. But I have some concerns. Mainly I don’t want to jeopardize my current position if thing doesn’t work out. Is it better for me to wait for one year and apply for any internal position after being in my current role for at least one year? If you guys suggest me giving the new one a try, what strategy you would recommend?
1) What is the best reason that I would like to apply for the new position?
2) If I talk to the hiring manager first to see the possibility to be considered, how to conduct the conversation? Call him/her directly? Or e-mail him/her?
3) I don’t have many experiences with that product/function. Is the chance low?
I really appreciate your sincere inputs..
