12月28日，蠓蟲在非洲馬拉維湖麵上聚集飛舞好像黑色的雲霧。
在每年的12月至第二年的1月的雨季前期（當地的雨季為12月至第二年的3月），大量的蠓蟲聚集到馬拉維湖上空進行交配，如雲霧在湖麵上隨風飄蕩，形成馬拉維湖“蟲子雲”奇觀。馬拉維湖是非洲第三大淡水湖。
