黛玉美麗而聰慧。雖然自小怯弱多病，卻有“一段自然的風流態度”。所謂“心較比幹多一竅，病如西子勝三分”。心靈純真，堅執於感情與理想的追求。“孤高自許，目無下塵”，不善於掩飾自己的言行，常用“比刀子還利害”的話語投向庸俗與虛偽，以至被周圍的人以為“刻薄”、“專挑人的不好”。在禮教森嚴，人際關係勢利而冷酷的賈府中，她深感自己寄人籬下的屈辱地位，時時“自矜自重，小心戒備”。黑暗的環境，個性的壓抑，使她內心蘊積著反抗的情緒。在蔑視權勢、渴望自由的思想基礎上，她被賈寶玉視為從來不講“混帳話”的知己，他們由兩小無猜而發展為真摯的愛情。黛玉把全部的熱情與憧憬都寄托在這一愛情之中。

這愛情給她帶來更多痛苦的眼淚。她追求的是執著、專一的愛情，薛寶釵的插入及“金玉良緣”的傳說使她疑慮、憂鬱。另一方麵，由於禮教的束縛，盡管她多次試探寶玉，卻不敢明確表達自己的戀情，當寶玉用《西廂》曲詞向她吐露衷腸時，她卻生氣地說他“學了這些混話來欺負我”。這愛情更給她添上一種難以痊愈的“心病”，她不能主宰自己的婚姻，麵對強大的封建勢力，她無力抗爭。於是她“不是愁眉，便是長歎”，落花與眼淚成為她悲苦命運的象征，如她那首著名的《葬花詞》所描寫：“一年三百六十日，風刀霜劍嚴相逼，明媚鮮妍能幾時，一朝漂泊難尋覓。”又如另一首《桃花行》所說：“眼淚觀花淚易幹，淚幹春盡花憔悴。”這種強烈的悲劇感與幻滅感既是對自身命運的悲悼，也是對不合理封建製度的控訴。

賈母、王夫人為寶玉議婚，終於揀中賢惠明達的薛寶釵，並用鳳姐的“掉包兒”之計，瞞過寶、黛而完成“金玉良緣”。寶玉與寶釵成婚之夜，黛玉在瀟湘館裏的病榻上，滿懷悲憤，焚去詩稿，嘔血而死。

一個是閬苑仙葩，一個是美玉無暇。

若說沒奇緣，今生偏又遇著他；

若說有奇緣，如何心事終虛話？

一個枉自嗟呀，一個空勞牽掛。

一個是水中月，一個是鏡中花。

想眼中能有多少淚珠兒，

怎禁得秋流到冬，春流到夏！
