很難說安吉麗娜走上演藝這條路是否來自家庭背景的幸運。盡管她有一對同為演員的父母，她的父親還是大名鼎鼎的喬恩-沃特--那個早在60年代就開始演戲，曾演出過《午夜牛仔》《碟中諜》《造雨人》《國家的敵人》《校隊藍調》等大片的名演員，但是安吉麗娜卻從小就失去家庭的溫暖。她1975年6月4日出生於洛杉機，原來名叫安吉麗娜-朱麗-沃特，但是很小的時候父母就離婚了。從此她被母親把名字中的“沃特”兩字去掉，開始了孤獨的成長。

在安吉麗娜的記憶中，生活好象一直都充滿動蕩。小的時候因為經濟窘迫她和媽媽與弟弟經常搬家，直到長大後她作了職業模特也是常常因為忙於做巡演而在各大城市間飛來飛去。在對做模特感到厭煩後，她來到紐約，在李-斯特萊斯伯格戲劇院和紐約大學做了一名普通的學生，之後便開始在劇院做表演。接著很快她便殺入演影圈--1993年她在《電子人2》中做了一個跑龍套的小角色，接著1995年又跑到《駭客》中扮演了一名計算機黑客。安吉麗娜清秀的麵容和不俗的演技很快便引起了觀眾和導演的注意。
