依據更改後的工程施工安排，塵香和塵凡先做了通風道防盜牆的抗破壞實驗，發現防盜牆和行宮的防盜地麵非常堅固。塵香為了方便挖洞進入行宮決定更改設計，把進氣口移到行宮北麵的院牆旁邊。塵香用自己的房產做抵押，在縣銀行得到了貸款。然後他用全部的錢去到那三個施工監理買防盜牆材料的地方，買回了大量的防盜牆材料。他把那建築材料存放到了離家不遠處的一個倉庫。一天，那三個政府監理去遠處購買裝在雷鋒塔上的避雷針去了，塵香就開始按照他的方案建造備用進氣道的防盜牆了。
According to the revised construction schedule, Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal first conducted an anti-destruction test on the ventilation duct anti-theft wall and found that the anti-thefts wall and the anti-thefts floor of the palace were very solid. To make it easier for them to dig a hole into the palace, Dust-Scent decided to change the design and move the air inlet to the north wall of the palace. Dust-Scent used his own property as collateral to get a loan from a county bank. 七天後，那三個縣政府的監理回來後，發現塵香更改了防盜牆的設計方案，而且備用的防盜牆已經建成了三分分之一了，立刻叫停了防盜牆的施工。他們三個問塵香：“你在哪裏弄來了那麽多的錢，買了這麽多的防盜牆材料？”
塵香指著行宮南麵的房子說：“我用我媽給我的房子和地抵押給了縣銀行得到了貸款。然後，我用全部的錢才買了這些材料。”
三個施工監理問：“如果中央政府不認同你的更改方案，那你的房子和地就被銀行收走了。你破產之後住在哪裏？”
塵香指著行宮內的地說：“住這兒！我弟弟才十五歲，未成年。我媽（舜帝）不會讓他住在大街上。”
Seven days later, the three county government supervisors came back and found that Dust-Scent had changed the design of the anti-thefts wall, and the backup anti-thefts wall had been built one-third of the way, so they immediately stopped the construction of the anti-theft walls. The three of them asked Dust-Incense: "Where did you get so much money to buy so many anti-thefts wall materials?"
Dust-Scent pointed to the house to the south of the palace and said, "I mortgaged the house and land my mother gave me to the county bank to get a loan. Then, I used all the money to buy the materials.”
The three construction supervisors asked, "If the central government does not agree with your change plan, your house and land will be taken away by the bank. Where will you live after you go bankrupt?"
Dust-Scent pointed to the palace and said, "Here! My brother is only fifteen years old, a minor. My mother (Emperor Shun) will not let him live on the street."
三個施工監理說：“你媽不會讓你們倆住在這座行宮裏，嫌你們倆礙眼。她也不會讓你們倆成為乞丐，住在大街上。那她就得同意你的更改方案。但這事是你在我們三人都不在的情況下做的，與我們無關。你得把你的設計更改申請，和你剛才說的話都寫下來。我們拿著你的更改方案和你剛才的辯護詞去縣裏匯報。”
傳說說，縣裏收到了沉香的更改方案申請後，也沒說什麽，就把更改方案申請和辯護詞一起送到了位於武漢的中央政府。中央政府就同意了沉香的通風口更改方案。
The three construction supervisors said, "Your mother will not let you two live in this palace because you are an eyesore. She will not let you two become beggars and live on the street. Then she must agree to your change plan. But you did this when the three of us were not around, so it has nothing to do with us. You must write down your design change application and what you just said. We will take your change plan and your just defense statement to report to the county."
Legend says it that after receiving Dust-Incense's application for a change of plan, the county did not say anything but sent the application for a change of plan and the defense statement to the central government in Wuhan. The central government agreed to Dust-Incense's ventilation outlet change plan.
隨後，塵香聽這三個施工監理議論，這座行宮的駐軍基地房子少，不夠用，要擴建。塵香說：“擴建不如建一座新的。這座軍營離行宮太近。你看士兵們把行宮的院門前弄得多髒。還有士兵總是扒著牆頭向院子裏看。我聽我媽叨咕過兩次了，‘這些人總是向院子裏看，也不知道他們在看什麽！哪天我找幾個人把他們都抓住，刺瞎他們。”
三個施工監理立刻警覺起來了，回答：“謝謝您給我們提供這些信息。為了方便追蹤調查，那些士兵當中有三分之一是我們的本地人。把他們弄瞎了會增大我們縣的民生支出。我們縣本來就窮。”這仨人就向縣政府匯報去了。
塵香悄悄地向建築公司經理詢問：“如果建新兵營，位置選在哪裏合適？”
建築公司經理回答：“行宮東麵的路是一條驛道的主幹道。如果建新兵營可以兼顧驛站，所以新兵營的位置就是在驛道旁邊錯開行宮正門的兩個位置。”
Then, Dust-Scent heard these three construction supervisors discussing that the garrison base houses of this palace were few and insufficient and had to be expanded. Chen Xiang said: "It is better to build a new one than to expand it. This military camp is too close to the palace. You see how dirty the soldiers make the front of the courtyard gate of the palace. And the soldiers are always picking at the wall to investigate the courtyard. I've heard my mom mutter twice, 'These people are always looking into the courtyard, I don't know what they're looking at! One of these days I'll get some men to catch them all and stab them blind."
The three construction supervisors were immediately alert and replied, "Thank you for giving us this information. For the sake of tracking the investigation, a third of those soldiers are our locals. Blinding them would increase our county's livelihood expenses. Our county is already poor." These three men then went to report to the county government.
Dust-Scent quietly asked the manager of the construction company, “If a new barracks is built, where would be a suitable location?”
The manager of the construction company replied, "The road to the east of the palace is a main stagecoach route. If the boot camp is built, it can take care of the stagecoach station, so the location of the boot camp is the two positions next to the stagecoach road staggered from the main gate of the palace."
這天，那三位施工監理領著本地守窯（即守衛行宮）的將軍來找塵香，征詢新兵營的選址意見。塵香領著他們四人看了建築公司經理所指出的兩個位置。然後他說：“我的意見是你們選在行宮南三百米，我家的東麵。原因是你們的士兵可以去我家西麵的河裏去抓魚，洗澡。如果你們選在北麵，你們的士兵去河裏取水，在路上尿泡尿，我媽媽看見了，就不高興。原因是這裏的地勢北高南低，她認為你們在汙染她的水源。 另外，你們士兵的操練場可以選在兵營的北麵200米以南。這樣我媽可以在行宮裏看見你們的操練，讓她感覺安全。”
守衛行宮的將軍聽後，覺著塵香說的有道理，對三位施工監理說：“皇帝家的地就是禁地。我們的軍隊應該守護在禁地的外圍。行宮周圍有皇帝自己的衛兵。我們把兵營建在河的下遊，以免皇帝說我們在汙染她的水源。”
On that day, those three construction supervisors led the local generals who guarded the kiln (i.e., guards of the palace) to Dust-Scent for advice on the location of the new barracks. Dust-Scent led the four of them to look at the two locations pointed out by the manager of the construction company. Then he said, "My opinion is that you pick the location three hundred meters south of the palace, east of my house. The reason for this is that your soldiers can go to the river west of my house to catch fish and bathe. If you choose the north side, your soldiers will go to the river to get water and urinate on the way, my mother (i.e., Emperor Shun) will not be happy when she sees them. The reason is that the terrain here is high in the north and low in the south, and she thinks you are polluting her water. Also, the drill ground for your soldiers can be chosen 200 meters north of the back of the barracks. This way my mom can see your drills from the palace and make her feel safe."
After hearing this, the general guarding the palace felt that Dust-Scent had a point and said to the three construction supervisors, "The emperor's family's land is forbidden land. Our troops should guard the perimeter of the forbidden land. The palace is surrounded by the emperor's own guards. Let's build the barracks downstream of the river so that the emperor doesn't say we're polluting her water."
3.6.2.7-3 承建兵營 Undertake to build a barracks
不久之後，三位施工監理就來找塵香了，說：“天蓬元帥女英就批準了這項有兵營和驛站兩項功能的軍事基地項目。我們縣政府負責提供土地。我們調查了，發現那塊地是你的。你可以選擇賣給我們，也可以選擇租給我們。無論你選擇哪種，價錢都是由縣政府決定的；但是你肯定不吃虧！”
塵香回答：“我不賣。”
三位施工監理回答：“好！你選擇租給我們。有三種選擇。實際這三種都差不多。一但兵營建成了，什麽事都由不得你了。”
Soon after, the three construction supervisors came to Dust-Incense, saying, "Celestial Ceiling Marshal, Heroine, then approved this military base project with the two functions of a barracks and a stagecoach station. Our county government is responsible for providing the land. We investigated and found that the land is yours. You can choose to sell it to us or rent it to us. Whichever you choose, the price will be decided by the county government; but you certainly won't lose out!"
Dust-Scent replied, “I don’t want to sale it.”
The three construction supervisors replied, "Fine! You choose to rent to us. There are three options. All three are pretty much the same. Once the barracks are built, nothing is up to you."
塵香隨意選擇了一項租賃合同，然後說：“我還想和你們合作，以平分利潤的形式和你們合作承建這座兵營。”
三位施工監理回答：“我們願意和你合作。隻是我們建議您換一家做預算的公司。你放心，我們肯定能在招標中拿到這個工程的合同。”
塵香同意了。
塵香和建築公司商量承建新兵營的事，開始時，他不同意。後來，他從教徒弟塵凡的角度考慮，決定讓塵凡有一次做一個完整的工程項目的工作經曆，就答應了。
Dust-Scent chose a lease contract at random and then said, “I would also like to cooperate with you in the form of splitting the profits equally with you to build this barracks.”
The three construction supervisors replied, "We would like to work with you. It's just that we suggest you change the company that does the budget. Don't worry, we can definitely get the contract for this project in the bidding."
Dust-Scent agreed.
Dust-Scent discussed with the construction company about the construction of the new barracks. At first, he disagreed. Later, considering the perspective of teaching his apprentice Dust-Mortal, he decided to let Dust-Mortal have the experience of working on a complete engineering project, so he agreed.
3.6.2.7-4 再次更改行宮的設計 Changing the Design of Palace Again
忽然建築公司經理需要回家裏啊裏喪失事。這時，三位施工監理幾乎不來工地了。塵香和塵凡就告訴施工防盜牆的工頭說：“開始進氣通道防盜牆的施工。不過，設計又改了，我要把通風係統的進氣口和備用進氣口連起來。在兩個進氣口之間修建一條通風道。”
工頭問：“那條通風道沒用啊！？”
Suddenly, the manager of the construction company had a funeral at home, and he needed to go home to attend the funeral. At this time, the three construction supervisors rarely came to the construction site. Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal told the foreman who was building the anti-theft wall: "Start the construction of the air intake channel anti-theft wall. However, the design has changed again. I want to connect the air intake of the ventilation system and the backup air intake; build a ventilation duct between the two air intakes."
The foreman asked: "That ventilation duct is useless!"
塵香回答：“修這條通風道可以把我整修行宮工程的的利潤提高三分之一。我不幹，我就賺不到這份利潤。”
工頭回答：“兩個老板都同意了；我當然願意了。我不幹活也沒也沒人給我利潤。”
塵香說：“先建這兩條通風道的拐角部分。建成後，即便他們不願意，也改不了。”
Dust-Scent replied: "Building this ventilation duct can increase my profit from the renovation of the palace by one third. If I don't do it, I won't make this profit."
The foreman replied: "Both bosses agreed; of course I am willing. If I don't work, no one will give me profit also."
Dust-Scent said: "First build the corners of these two ventilation ducts. After it is built, even if they don't want to, they can't change it."
隨後，塵香讓塵凡去建築公司經理家吊唁，讓經理返回的時間推遲四天。原因是建築公司經理非常喜歡塵凡，幾次說要帶他去參觀幾個古跡，現場為他講解建築學的知識和施工的技術。
塵香看進氣口和另一條通風道的連接口已經形成了，就去縣政府申請更改設計了。他晚上回來就請建防盜牆的工頭喝酒，說：“縣裏堅決不同意這次對設計的更改！”
施工防盜牆的工頭聽後，一邊笑一邊說：“這事不奇怪！”
Dust-Scent then asked Dust-Mortal to go to the construction company manager's house to offer his condolences and to postpone the manager's return for four days. The reason for this was that the manager of the construction company liked Dust-Mortal very much and said several times that he would take him to visit several monuments and explain to him on site the knowledge of architecture and the techniques of construction.
Dust-Scent went to the county government to apply for a change in design when he saw that the connection between the air intake and the other ventilation duct had been formed. When he came back at night, he invited the foreman who built the anti-thefts wall to have a drink and said, “The county strongly disagrees with this change to the design!”
The foreman who built the anti-thefts wall laughed as he heard this and said, “It's not surprising!”
倆人嘮了一段時間後，塵凡哭了，說：“我辜負了建築公司經理對我的信任，我不想讓他知道這件事。”
工頭說：“我建的連接你要擴建的通風道的連接口是個正常的預留孔，可以被塞起來。這樣做符合國家規範。你說不想讓你的公司經理知道這件事；我可以在堵住預留孔後把牆表麵處理一下，把表麵變成半塊磚厚度的防盜牆。這樣做你的建築公司經理能看出來。但那也符合建築規範；有些時候砌磚的人不注意就會出現那種磚縫的組合。”
After the two of them had been nattering for some time, Dust-Scent cried and said, “I've let down the manager of the construction company and I don't want him to know about this.”
The foreman said, "The connector I built to connect the ventilation duct you're expanding is a normal pre-drilled hole that can be plugged up. This follows the state code. You say you don't want your company manager to know about this; I can surface the wall after plugging up the preexisting hole and turn the surface into a burglar-proof wall half the thickness of a brick. Doing this your construction company manager can see it. But that would also meet the building code; sometimes bricklayers don't pay attention to that combination of brick joints."
塵香立刻不哭了，說：“你騙我！？”
工頭拉著塵香到外麵磚垛，擺模型，做示範。塵香學會了拆除預留孔活塞的技巧。工頭還承諾：明天下午三點鍾之前，一切恢複正常，不會再有人看到這次更改設計的痕跡。
第三天，公司經理和塵凡回來後，看見通風口的施工已經完成了大部分。塵凡跟著他查看。經理不經意間看見預留孔處的半壁磚防盜牆麵，思考了一會兒，就離開了。
Dust-Scent immediately stopped crying and said, “You lied to me!?”
The foreman dragged Dust-Scent outside to the brick stacks, set up a model, and gave a demonstration. Dust-Scent learned the skill of removing the pre-drilled hole piston. The foreman also promised that by three o'clock tomorrow afternoon, everything would be back to normal, and no one would see any traces of this change in design.
On the third day, the company manager and Dust-Mortal returned to see that the construction of the vents was mostly complete. Dust-Mortal followed him to check it out. The manager inadvertently saw the half-bricked burglar-proof wall at the preexisting hole, thought for a moment, and left.
3.6.2.7-5
從此，塵香和塵凡開始了他們倆在行宮北麵的山裏挖洞的工程。他倆先挖了一個工作室來生產支護山洞的拱架。這哥倆的力氣大，用巨石做了個可移動的洞口門。他們倆每隔幾天就會在夜裏來到工作室向行宮挖地道。隨後的幾個月裏，他們倆挖了約500米長的地道。由於地道太長，他倆不得不給地道做通氣孔。
From there, Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal began a project in which they both dug caves in the mountains north of the palace. They first dug a workshop to produce an arch to support the cave. These two brothers were strong enough to make a removable cave door out of boulders. The two of them would come to the workshop every few days at night to dig tunnels into the palace. In the following months, the two of them dug tunnels about 500 meters long. Because the tunnels were so long, the two of them had to make ventilation holes for the tunnels.
