分析一道TOEFL試題(轉載)

我隻是調查一下，絕沒有爭鋒鬥妍之意圖。請那些學英語不學語法的人，僅憑自己的語感，

不要查語法書，做以下選擇題：

1 Do you object if I call you by the first name?

2 Do you object that I call you by the first name?

3 Do you object to be called by the first name?

4 Do you object to my calling you by the first name?

哪個對？

這本是托福考題。3 Do you object to be called by the first name? 錯誤，美國老百姓也不會這麽說。1 Do you object if I call you by the first name?和2 Do you object that I call you by the first name?也不對，但美國老百姓多半不會認為是錯誤。可他們也不這麽說。如果一定要用object，他們會說Do you object to me calling you by the first name? 然而，大學英語教授和出版社編輯則會指出錯在哪裏，並認為隻有4 Do you object to my calling you by the first name?才正確。

道理在於object是不及物動詞，to是介詞，後麵要跟名詞或動名詞。至於要用my而不用me，那是因為反對的不是我，而是我的做法。

當然，這是較真。一般生活中，人們根本不用object，而會說Do you mind if I call you by the first name? 或May I call you by the first name? May/Can不分的美國人還會說Can I call you by the first name? 嚴格說來，最後一句不對，因為May表示允許，Can表示能力。

現在很多語言學家已變得比較寬容，認為語法在一定程度上也應是描述性的。如果大多數人都May/Can不分，就應該承認Can既表示能力，又表示允許。很多字典已經這樣定義了。另一個例子是their，新劍橋語法已經認為，在不知道陰陽性時，their可以擔當第三人稱單數代詞，而不必用his/her，比如：Everybody raised their hand.

回到上麵的選擇題來，不難看出，不學語法，單從生活中隻能學到最基本和較簡單的大眾英語，而且還得有大量的語言實踐，對於外國人，那怕僅僅是為了上研究生考試，不可行，也不夠。所以要看你學英語為什麽，一般老百姓的英語可達不到出版水平。雖然生活中幾乎沒人說Do you object to my calling you by the first name? 但是這句話簡單地表明了object的正確用法，不失為一種測試方法。如果給你個最近常用但較複雜的句子：Do you object to NATO's interference in the turmoil and conflicts that are devastating Libya? 恐怕對考生更不合適。
