         Along the fields as we came by
A year ago, my love and I,
The aspen over stile and stone
Was talking to itself alone.
"Oh who are these that kiss and pass?
A country lover and his lass;
Two lovers looking to be wed;
And time shall put them both to bed,
But she shall lie with earth above,
And he beside another love."

         And sure enough beneath the tree
There walks another love with me,
And overhead the aspen heaves
Its rainy-sounding silver leaves;
And I spell nothing in their stir,
But now perhaps they speak to her,
And plain for her to understand
They talk about a time at hand
When I shall sleep with clover clad,
And she beside another lad.

 

          沿著田野我們走過，

那是一年之前，我與我的女郎，

在石頭的階梯上邊，

有株白楊正自言自語地講:

“喔，是誰呀，邊走邊吻成對成雙?

是個鄉下小夥和他姑娘;

兩個情人看來定會結婚，

時間將會把他們帶上床;

但是姑娘會躺在黃土下，

另一個情人會臥在小夥的身旁。

 

         說得真對呀，我與另一個女郎，
又一次走過白楊樹邊上，
頭頂白楊樹銀色的樹葉，
發出像下雨般的聲響，
可是我一點都不懂說的是什麽，
也許現在它隻對她一個人講，
對她來說白楊的話明白曉暢。
葉子說的事情很快就會臨降:
我會睡在身上蓋滿紅花草的地方，
而她的身邊將躺著另一個情郎。

* 豪斯曼的這首詩，在詩集《西羅普郡一少年》中的編號為第 26 首。

        豪斯曼的詩裏，常常流露的是消極的情緒，對世事的看法往往是悲觀的、負麵 的。見到一對情人(詩裏寫的是“我”和“姑娘”)，詩人想到的是其中之一會死去，而 另一個則會與別的情人上床。他認為愛情是短暫的，因此是不可靠的。豪斯曼對愛情 持有這種觀點，可能與他自己不成功的戀愛經曆有關。
