作者愛德華·埃爾加（Edward Elgar,1857－1934）。《威風堂堂進行曲》(Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Op. 39)總共包括埃爾加在1901至1903年間陸續完成的五首短小的進行曲，其中的第一首被公認為最成功，因而也最著名。

本曲以一個短小的引子作為開始。接著，華麗而威風凜凜的主部主題強有力地呈現出來；與主部主題形成巧妙對照的是樂曲中段那具有民謠之美的旋律。可以說，這段旋律在英國的地位，幾乎與國歌一樣神聖。此外，甚至在美國英國許多院校的畢業典禮上，學生們也是在這支旋律的音樂聲中領取文憑，就連幾次英國皇室婚禮也演奏了這首《威風堂堂進行曲》，其影響之深遠可見一斑。

此曲目首演是在1901年，不過演出地點，有的說法說是在倫敦，也有的說是在利物浦。不過能確定的一點是，樂曲首演時獲得了巨大成功，以至於樂隊在觀眾的要求下重複演奏了三遍，觀眾激動的情緒才有所好轉。由此可見《威風堂堂進行曲》在英國有多麽的受歡迎。甚至到了現在，該曲在英國演出也很少隻演奏一遍。即便日不落帝國已經過去了很久，但是現在的英國人仍然能夠隨著樂隊一起演唱《威風堂堂進行曲》，由此可見樂曲帶給了英國人多麽大的震撼和心靈上的共鳴。
