Read a book called “A guide to Elegance” last week, a very interesting book. It talks about the elegance of personal adornment and its relation to fashion. I would like to accept some of her opinions and suggestion for my future shopping, but I can hardly practise other recommendations.
According to the author’s description, to be elegant is not to simply means to purchase the most expensive wardrobe. Elegance is a sort of harmony that rather resembles beauty, with the difference that the latter is more often a gift of nature and the former the results of art.
The origin of elegance is easily traced. It springs and develops from the habits of a civilized culture.
The word comes from the Latin eligere, which means ‘to select’.
I like some quotations in the book
“Elegance is the privilege of age”
“Fashion is the acceptance of the ridiculous”
Looking around, you can find many beautiful creatures, but you can hardly say they are chic.
Ironically , the only quote in “ Hamlet ” I can remember is about dress :
“Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy, but not expressed in fancy; rich, but not gaudy, for the apparel oft proclaims the man” (Shakespeare)
“有錢可以辦貴重的衣服,可不要奇裝異服;富而不俗, 因為衣著可以看出人品。。。”
Moreover, when a person is over 40, the appearance is mostly impacted by heart, so Bible says “ Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. ”
Just some non-sense thoughts for killing time ;-),
