Get into Research at UBC Undergrad Science: Funding Resources

上周麵了一個老板，基本上同意明年夏天進實驗室，讓我自己找funding，給了我幾個縮寫，什麽HSFBCY，PHCRI之類的，看上去更像密碼而不是某單位的名字。忽然想起今年年初參加過一次院裏組織的Get into Research信息會，領了個材料，有不少funding resources，昨天整屋子竟無意中翻出來了。整理到網上，做個資料備份。

這個是加拿大國家量子及核物理實驗室，五個成員大學，七個協作大學，總部在UBC溫哥華校區


2 Faculty of Medicine Student Summer Research Project (SSRP)

UBC醫學院設的，帶有競賽性質(competition)的夏季學生研究項目

The Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) is a competition open to undergraduate and medical students registered at UBC for a summer research project supervised by a member of the Faculty of Medicine (FOM), or in the case of projects funded by the CIHR/HSFC Strategic Training Program in Transfusion Science, a member of that program. Not all students who apply will be funded. A committee will review and rank only complete, eligible applications. Students with an average of less than 75% in their last 2 completed years are unlikely to be funded.

作為理學院的本科生要想和醫學院的學生爭，不知道難度會如何。而且不知道為什麽，目前網頁上寫著：

3 National Research Council (NRC) Summer Employment

這個是加拿大政府機構，申請人必須是公民或者移民 -_-

4 Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Program (MURP) and Conference (MURC)

這兩個要大力推薦，門檻低，人數多，規模大，跨學科，我沒有跟過，具體不了解，聽參加過MURC的朋友的反饋，不錯。提醒一下，07/08 MURP的截止日期是10月9號，MURC是明年2月，從網站給的信息來看，MURC是本科生的研究會議，到時候口頭報告（oral presentation）和海報報告（poster presentation）還會有得獎者和提名，挺好玩的，準備明年去湊湊熱鬧。

NSERC是加拿大自然科學和工程研究協會，大財主，特有錢，加拿大最大的funding resource，很多PI拿的就是NSERC的資金

7 Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP)

這個總算是帶我們玩兒了，不過加拿大公民依然有優先權。
Although non-Canadians may apply for jobs under FSWEP, priority will be given to Canadian citizens.
這個沒有競賽性質，而是工作機會。

8 UBC Science Co-op

傳說中的co-op，不少國際學生就是憑借在本科階段超過一年的co-op全職工作經曆，畢業的時候就夠條件申請移民，強烈推薦。
12-16-month program in which the student works in a career-related position. Students apply to job postings through the Co-op office and obtain 6 academic credits for each 4 month Co-op term completed. The program also includes workshops on job-seeking (resumes, cover letters etc.).

這個以前也介紹過，官方的勤工儉學項目，必須是教育貸款申請人或者國際學生，工作機會不限於本專業，想什麽圖書館整理書之類的就是從這兒找的，時薪都不錯，16加起。

10 UBC Directed Studies
Students work with a faculty supervisor on a research project. Directed studies is considered a class and consists of 3 credits per term. Students are responsible for contacting the faculty member whose research area they are interested in.
這就不給錢了，所謂指導學習，Major是448，相對應的Honors是449，後者要求更嚴格，必須有論文。基本上每個係都會開設。

11 UBC Undergraduate Research Opportunities and Directory (ROAD)

UBC Science Undergraduate 研究機會匯總，名字挺大，我沒試過，不評價。

資料上列的就是這些，大多數是獎學金或競賽，後麵是工作機會和448指導學習，感覺給國際本科生的funding機會幾乎沒有。

其實這是比較有規模有曆史的項目，我們還可以直接找到感興趣的中心或者實驗室，直接找到老板，他肯雇你，沒有獎學金或競賽的性質，競爭會小，當然那就是純粹的全職或半職的工作了。

相應的機構、中心和實驗室可以參考我上一篇帖子，主要是針對生物醫學類的。

這個也是競賽性質的，由評審委員會審核。但是好像隻給研究生以上的，本科生夏天這種幾個月的小打小鬧人家不理。這個需要信件詢問落實。

這個也沒戲，倒是有本科生獎學金，但不是BC&Yunkon的，是HSFO，安省的。還是要寫信問。不過意外發現了誌願者的機會，不知道會是什麽樣的工作。

看來爭取到額外的獎學金或者資金的可能性非常小，畢竟國際學生，又是本科，用上周五動物生理老師的話說，treated as dirt -_-

隻好參加中心自己的Summer Student Research Project，拿老板發的工資了。

P.S. 都寫好了，才想起來把CIHR給忘了，不應該。

CIHR Canadian Institutes of Health Research 加拿大健康研究院
成立於2000年，是醫學健康研究領域最大的研究及資金機構，下麵有13個研究所，很多PI的實驗室就是用這裏的funding建起來的。
