【1939年日軍第一次入侵廣西，白崇禧在幾乎耗盡了國軍第一隻機械化部隊——杜聿明的第五軍才攻占了被日軍死守的昆侖關之後，幾次想收複南寧未果。雖然此時廣西境內大軍雲集，有桂係自己的嫡係部隊31軍和46軍，也有中央軍，兵力遠超日軍，而且還處於內線作戰，占有天時、地利、人和，但在昆侖關戰役之後，就是無法再撼日軍一步，直至來年日軍自動撤出廣西。可以說，第一次日軍入侵廣西期間（亦即我們通常所說的桂南會戰期間），是號稱小諸葛的白崇禧指揮生涯中最失敗的一段時期——敵情判斷失誤、攻守進退失據、戰略戰術失常、將士不肯用命。回顧這段曆史，每每令人扼腕。下麵的這篇報道，間接印證了國軍在包圍南寧無法攻下而自己遭受慘重損失之役中，白崇禧指揮的無能。】

CHUNGKING, Friday.

A High Command spokesman announced to-day that the Chinese had almost surrounded Nanning (South China), which the Japanese captured some weeks ago.

Nanning, a treaty port in Kwangsi province, on the Yukiang, is the gateway for petrol and other essential supplies from French Indo-China. Its loss has isolated China from all overseas supplies.

The spokesman declared that the military situation on the Kwangsi front had developed in favour of the Chinese. Four thousand Japanese were completely isolated north- east of Nanning. Japanese planes had tried to drop food to them, but most of it had fallen behind the Chinese lines.

A Japanese report on Wednesday said that the Chinese failed in an attempt to recapture Nanning on Sunday, and left 2,750 dead.
