      百香果, 產於美洲的熱帶及亞熱帶地區。原產於巴西，巴拉圭。1610年間傳入歐洲，當時西班牙傳教士發現其花的形狀極似基督之十字架刑具，柱頭上3個分裂，極似3根釘，花瓣紅斑、恰似耶穌頭部被荊棘刺出血形象，5個花藥，恰似受傷傷痕，西班牙人以Passioflos名之，直譯之為受難花 (Passion Flower)。 西番蓮的果汁常被用作香料，加在其他果汁中。
      日本人稱“百香果”為“pashonfurutsu”（passion fruits），日本名因為其花長得像鍾表，又是時計草的同類，故稱為“時計果”。英文稱時計草為“passion flower”對時計果稱之為“passion fruit” 。此“ passion ”不是“熱情”的意思。
   在原產地的巴西稱為“ maracujá（馬拉庫加），秘魯則稱為“maracuya”（馬拉克呀）、中南美各地稱為“ granadilla”（格拉納迪拉）、夏威夷稱之為“ liliko?i”（莉莉可怡）。漢語的百香果完全是英語的“passion”的諧音字加上果字。該名稱又從台灣帶回日本後日本根據台灣名稱的諧音成了“passhonfurutsu”了。
    在中國大陸多稱為“西番蓮”（學名：Passiflora edulis），也有的地方叫百香果、熱情果、雞蛋果。 1610年間傳入歐洲，當時西班牙傳教士發現其花的形狀極似基督之十字架刑具，
    此果在中文地區的常見不同名稱：
    台灣：百香果，因台灣於1907年由日本人田代安定從石川植物園引進，野化，所以也稱時計果（台語，sî-kè-kó），時鍾瓜（台語，sî-tsing-kue），客家人稱tokeisō（時計草日語音）。
   中國大陸：西番蓮、熱情果、百香果、雞蛋果
   香港：熱情果、百香果、西番果、巴西果（但巴西堅果也被稱為巴西果，易混淆）。
