白發三千丈，緣愁似個長
------英語誇張修辭法趣談
“ 白發三千丈，緣愁似個長。不知明鏡裏，何處得秋霜。” (李白詩)
即使李白終身未理過發，也難有三千丈的煩惱絲。看來說話誇張是古今中外文人的伎倆之一。 刻意的誇張與吹牛不同，如果運用得當，可以令文字或言辭活色生香，妙趣橫生。
1．形容女人泳裝用料之少：
The new bikini has no room to put the logo.
這件新比基尼泳裝連打上商標的地方都沒有。
Her bathing suit is smaller than the price tag.
她的泳裝比價錢牌還小。
The high school girls are now wearing miniskirts the size of gum wrapper..
中學女生現在穿的泳裝比口香糖包裝紙還小。
2．形容女人之醜：
My wife is so ugly, when she sees a mouse the mouse jumps on the chair.
我老婆太醜了，她碰到老鼠，老鼠都要跳上椅子。
My brother intends marrying a second wife who is so ugly that he has to tell his children ghost stories for two weeks so that she won’t frighten the children when he brings her home.
我兄弟打算再續弦。新女伴長得太醜，我兄弟要連續兩周給他孩子們講鬼故事。這樣等他帶她回家時就不會嚇壞他們了。
3．形容女人肥胖：
She was so fat, she was the front row in her high school graduation picture.
她太胖了，高中畢業照片上她自己就占了整個前排。
She is real fat-----she and the Statue of Liberty wear the same size dress.
她實在很胖------她和自由女神穿同一尺寸的裙子。
當然，在應用誇張手法進行諷刺的時候，必須注意分寸和“政治正確”禁忌，以免流於粗鄙或偏見。
4．形容城市治安之差：
In New York, cabs are very expensive. It’s cheaper to get slugged by a mugger and wait for the ambulance.
紐約的出租車太貴了。還不如被劫匪打劫，等救護車來送回家更便宜些。
There is no trust in New York. Muggers are now demanding identification.
誠信在紐約已經蕩然無存。現在，連劫匪都要你出示身份證。
New York muggers are updated. They’ve been starting taking credit cards.
紐約的劫匪也與時俱進。他們開始收受信用卡了。
In my neighborhood, the local gun-shop had a back-to-school sale. The high school newspaper had an obituary column.
我們家附近的槍店有開學減價大甩賣。中學的校報裏有個訃告欄。
In Miami, a man was held up so many times that he developed tan armpits. (exaggeration)
在邁阿密，有個人被打劫次數太多，連腋窩都曬黑了（注：因經常作舉手投降狀）。
5．形容經濟狀況惡劣：
Business is so bad, the bankruptcy court just opened a drive-in window.
經濟狀況奇差，連破產法庭都新開了個免下車申請窗口。
Business is so bad, one big hotel chain is stealing towel from its guests.
經濟狀況奇差，連一家連鎖大酒店都開始偷客人的毛巾。
6．形容婚姻關係：
I have been married for so many times my marriage certificate now reads: “To Whom It May Concern.”
我結婚次數太多，現在結婚證上的名字欄寫著：希有關人士知照。
She divorced so fast she got the custody of her wedding cake.
她離婚速度奇快，居然獲得結婚蛋糕的監護權。
