noso, to answer your question, I believe option 3 is the fairest and best. Chinese government will likely go for option 2. China may win the fight(s) but will loose the war in the end.
There seems to be an overwhelming belief that all the westerns are against Chinese, and all western media have got it wrong and only CCTV got it right. Do you really believe that or are you hoping for medals from the CCP and CCTV? Another overwhelming opinion is that we Chinese should be united but what these people really are saying is that we should all be ganging up against Tibetans regardless. I personally prefer having my own view, making my own mind up and not blindly following the self claimed and narrow minded nationalists. Anyway, how many of you would be brave enough to admit that you have abandoned your Chinese citizenship to be American, Australian or whatever? And the people you are fighting against, i.e. Tibetans were born Tibetans. So you can abandon your right of being Chinese and Tibetans cannot fight for their birth right of being Tibetans?

In Paris on Monday, as it passed through the French capital under armed guard, the torch was extinguished several times, and police officers were forced to move it aboard a bus to protect it as demonstrators swarmed the security detail.
Chinese Olympic organizers abruptly canceled the last leg, as well as a stop at City Hall, where a banner proclaimed, “Paris Defends Human Rights Everywhere in the World.”

Support you! No matter what happened so far, all Chinese around the world, we should support our country, support each other, support Olympic. we can not change other people’s opinion, but we can do whatever we think the best for Olympic!
Don't understand why the Canada leader involves in this Tibet issue. Maybe I am not a very knowledged person, but a very simple example: First nation has their own cultures and life style, but now has been changed after the other nations entried the land they used to live. The current government put a lots effort try to change First nation's living condition, some of them being appreciated, some of them not, however, can you imaging if one day, some people they don't like the change, they feel their cultured has been interupted, and some kids just jump to the street, burn the houses down, killing other nations on the street, what do you think the local policemen will do??? The policemen will take the trouble makers to the jail, right? Now, it is in Tibet, for people who caused trouble, Chinese policemen tried to hold it till it is over the edge, then it is too much? then some people in far away place watch it like a game since they are safe, just talking and bothering local government and tell they what to do, in order to put pressures on local government, they even start to against the Olympic game, which should not involve the political issues at all, remember? the oliver leaf? Leave China alone, and they know what to do and how, leave Olympic game alone!

Frankly, This article is very thoughtful and constructive to me. But the comments...I mean a lot of comments here reminds me of all the crazy people during the extreme times, like those in the culture revolution era, Americans after the 9/11, or even the Germans at the Nazi time. If you don't like the way you were treated, don't treat it back in the same way, or you just put yourself in the same catagory with those you hate so much.
It's not always a win or lose game.
Those lost temper here are pretty much showing no difference from those they criticize the most.
I think a proper education is very important. This morning, one of my co-workers asked me if Tibet is one of China's neignboring countries. I didn't argue with her, instead, I explained to her Tibet is part of China, just like California is a state of America. I realized many Americans don't know, and may not be even interested in knowing anything about the history of Tibet. I have been volunteered a lot at the elementary schools and middle schools, trying to tell the kids about China, from a positive point of view. The media only shows human rights issues and environmental issues, they rarely show how beautiful our country is, how nice Chinese people are... I wish my little effort can have some impact, to one, ten, one hundred, and more American people. Someday, I wish they will change their view.
This is nothing surprising. The entire fiasco is orchestrated by the West, and the Dalai Lama has been an American proxy since he fled in 1959. It will only escalate as the Olympics draws near. It will die down once the Olympics is over. China should think about its religious policy in Xizang. There is no other government in the world that provides financial support to sustain a religious group. I think Mao did the right thing in shutting down the monastaries and sending the monks to work the land. The monks are "parasites" of society.
哥們,就靠造謠惑眾吸引眼球,還要給中國政府出謀劃策?歇歇吧. 藏獨分子孤注一擲,就以為世上的人都讚成? 看看這個:
"Everyone has a right to express themselves but to stop it passing shows a lack of respect for the basic freedom of our athletes to carry this flame, which is a message of peace to the whole world."(Radio Australian)
support the first way! This is our own business. Who cares what they say? Go ahead and protest to boycott, because this is as far as it can go. China is not Iraq or Afghanistan or Bosnia, they don't dare to use military force or economical boycott

Clinton calls on Bush to boycott Olympics
Posted: 01:40 PM ET
Clinton is calling on President Bush to boycott the opening ceremony of the Olympics.
(CNN) – Hillary Clinton is calling on President Bush to boycott the opening of this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
In a statement released by her campaign Monday, the New York senator pointed to the recent protests in Tibet and the Chinese government’s failure to pressure the government of Sudan to end the violence in Darfur.
“These events underscore why I believe the Bush administration has been wrong to downplay human rights in its policy towards China,” said Clinton. “At this time, and in light of recent events, I believe President Bush should not plan on attending the opening ceremonies in Beijing, absent major changes by the Chinese government.”
Last month, Clinton – who has long advocated a tougher approach toward the Chinese government – declined to call for a U.S. boycott of the Olympic Games, but called for greater pressure leading up to the summer event in Beijing.
agree with xs's comment. China does not know how to play well this game yet. It is all a learning/lying process. Look at the current vic/presidents. They all lied under the oath about the iraq war among others. Accountable for that? No, are you kidding?
The Chinese gvmnt are too "good".

Do you think Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader and peace-maker? Do you really think this movement is just about Tibet? You are too naive! This new wave of anti-China movement is to weaken China and slow down its developing speed. If China is not important for them, why should they invest so much to just to shout and scream?
