理解“是”-----從“I am that I am” 說起

先引維基的介紹：

I am that I am is a common English translation of the Hebrew phrase ??????? ?????? ???????‎, ’ehyeh ’?šer ’ehyeh ([?eh?je ?a??er ?eh?je]) – also "I am who I am", "I will become what I choose to become",^{[citation needed]} "I am what I am", "I will be what I will be", "I create what(ever) I create", or "I am the Existing One". ^[1] The traditional English translation within Judaism favors "I will be what I will be" because there is no present tense of the verb "to be" in the Hebrew language.

 

在俺看來，後邊的英文轉譯都不準。

當然，俺不懂希伯來文。但是從意思上講，最符合神的特征的自我介紹就是 I am that I am.

中文譯作“我是那我是”，有點模糊，可能是原義，但是也不清楚。

俺覺得，更好的中譯應該是：我是那是者。

是者的是，是個意動用法，以。。。為是。

“我是那是者”，即我是做出“我是”的判斷的那個。這個句式和意思都有點象莊子的“生生者不生”，第一個生是動詞，第二個生是名詞。生生者，就是讓生命成為生命的存在，這個存在是沒有生死的。神全始全終，對現象的作用也與生生者相似。莊子也用過“物物”，《金剛經》中也有“眾生眾生者”，也是同樣的結構，同樣指向超形象的存在。

I am that I am。 that 這個詞用得很準，一下子就避免了糾結“我”的身份，把意思指向“我”以外----我是那使“我是”成為可能的存在。

如果換成 who what 就很難指到我的外麵去了，這樣，整句話就成了故弄玄虛的繞口令：我是我。我是我所是----陷到身份的循環裏去了。

相比之下，I am that I am 則直接指向超出具體身份的存在。

真正有生命的教導都是這樣：

比如梁武帝問達摩什麽是佛，達摩就反問“清談對麵，非佛而何？”-----能讓清談發生，對麵識人的，不是佛又是什麽呢？但武帝沒懂。可能他在預期一個具體的形象，而達摩說的則是超越形象的覺性。

又如，禪宗六祖惠能得五祖衣缽而走，有一位叫惠明的僧人追上來，請求六祖授法，六祖就讓他先安靜下來。過了很久，六祖就說，"不思善不思惡的時候，那個是你本來麵目" （也有人說是哪個，變成問題，指向是一樣的）。惠明馬上就明白了。

上麵兩個故事中的“何”與“那個”都不是“我是誰”的主語，而是讓“我是誰”發生的或者呈現的存在。

惠明很幸運，一下子就明白了。但絕大多數人都如梁武帝，把I am that I am 理解成 who I am/ what I am，落到日常思維邏輯中，錯過對神與覺性的領悟。
