the premature moon was produced out of a caterer's basket, just like the supper. Even the alliteration 'the premature moon, produced' makes me think so.
Maybe he was thinking of an old romance, or expecting a new one with Jordan, or he was marveling at nature, or he was dreaming of a fairyland, or he was conveying the idea that the whole thing was a fake, the moon was a fake, made by a caterer or a cook, and like the supper party would not last forever.
