Essay on Regretting

by Jiang Yan of South Dynasties

Let me watch the battlefield plain: wild weeds entwining bones and trees before tombs gathering ghosts. At this stage of life, is it imperative to talk of Providence? I am thus a born regretter, being stunned to no end. I think of the ancients regretting of such death.

點評：

1. Regretting：措辭不妥。Regret是“後悔”或者“惋惜”的意思，而本文所說的“恨”並不是“後悔”或者“惋惜”，而是“抱恨”的意思，這可以從原文中所舉的大量例子看出。

2. Let me watch：用得目明其妙。用let me do something，得有需要let me的原因，比如，你在看某東西，我要你讓我看，我可以說let me see it。你不聽勸，我要警告你，我會說let me tell you. 原文裏說到的plain就在那裏，不用let me就能 watch. 如果你要看，just go ahead and watch it. 所以，這裏let me watch三個字都是空字，毫無意義，而且沒有原因。

5. Trees before tombs （gathering ghosts）：雖然“拱木（斂魂）”出自《左傳》，指墳前大樹，但本文裏拱木並非僅指墳地前的樹木，既然這裏曾經是battlefields，那就不僅指墳前的大樹木，而是泛指所有大樹，所以trees一詞就足夠了。

6. Trees before tombs gathering ghosts: 有點目明其妙！什麽叫trees before tombs gathering ghosts，樹木能夠gather ghosts嗎？你以為江淹在這裏寫神話小說呢！這一句與上一句相對，上一句說骨頭看上去怎樣，本句說樹看上去怎樣。是指樹木看上去象鬼魂似的，而不是說“樹在聚集鬼魂”。

7. At this stage of life: 用得目明其妙，怎麽會沒有前後文突然出現一個at this stage of life？誰的life？江淹的life還是鬼魂的life？既然沒指名，根據語法，當然是指緊靠前麵的“鬼魂”的life咯，這當然是錯的。

8. is it imperative to talk of Providence：錯譯。原句不是“談論‘天命’是必須的嗎”這個意思。原句的意思是：到了這個時候（人死了），“天命”已經沒有意義了。

9. thus：錯用transitional word。Thus是“這樣”的意思。請問，前文裏什麽東西使你“這樣”（thus）成為a born regretter呢？你成為regretter不是前文裏的東西造成的，是天生的。

10. regretter: 自造詞。學好寫作的人都知道一般情況下不應自造新詞，除非有充分的理由。

11. I am thus a born regretter, being stunned to no end：沒有分清主次。這個句子後半部分比前半部分重要，所以要subordinate前半部分，而不是分詞化後半部分。

12. I think of the ancients regretting of such death：句法錯誤。Regret後不跟of。

Gazing the plain, the once battlefield, I see bones wreathed in weeds and trees look ghostly. When this is where one reaches during his life journey, Providence no longer makes sense. As an innate griever, I am stunned by this scene, which reminds me of those ancients who died in grievance.
