I think werhumn was right. The cop was trying to chat with you but your reaction to his "off topic" questions might have make him feel bad. When the cop who stopped you starts to chat with you, it is a good sign. Catch the chance you may get away - say something appropriate, and you may tell the cop that you made donation to cop association but the sticker is on your wife's car ....
Once the cop tells you his is going to give you a ticket, do not argue. They won't change their mind that's their rule. Just sign the ticket and if you have the time, you can go to court to challenge it.
For such stop sign ticket, if you defend yourself properly you may win. Last year I beat the assistant DA and cop, won such a case in the county court.
