the true status of the project you were wroking before the incident. In my view, if the PROJECT you were working on is indeed complete, it is acceptable for company to reduce work force, just bad timing for you, . If not, I think that your rights were somewhat violated. I do not know how you communicated your situation to your management. Did you follow company's procedure? any approval from management? The company should have established policies on how to handle death of direct relatives.
Usually, company will allow two days for attending funeral anywhere US. Your case is that you need to travel internationally, so one week would be reasonable, during my assignment in China, my America colleague who had to come back for his mother's funeral, he left for a week. For your case, you took about three weeks, maybe you need to find some reasons to justify that. For instance, you were hospitalized because of tremendous grief, but you need to have evidence.
