They just don't want her, reasons could be many -- like not contributing enough, not sensible to working environment and instructions, etc.
She took emergent leave for three weeks with such a short notice... She would have to be a very big person, or has her boss really standing behind her, otherwise it's going to be very hard to get back. Her time with the company is simply over.
The common sense: always ask first, get approval first, and your boss back up you, otherwise there is no way.
