I have changed the rear brake shoes for my car for the first time and I have a question which needs your kind help.
My car is a Toyota Tercel. It does not have ABS, but only a basic braking system. During the installation, I have turned the star wheel all the way into the adjuster to make it shortest so the two shoes (front and rear) can be closer so the drum can be installed. Otherwise the shoes are in the way and the drum can not be installed on easily. I have ensured the parking brake shoe level is engaged with the star wheel teeth.
I took a test drive after the new brake shoes are installed. I felt that the brake pedal press distance is significantly longer than before. The car can still stop or slow down but I need to step the brake pedal further (at least I felt that way). Is this normal after the new brake shoes being installed? I guess this happens because I shortened the adjuster so the distance between the brake shoes and the drum is bigger than before. Do I need to open the drum and turn the star wheel to make the adjuster longer so the distance between the brake shoes and the drum can be smaller? What other adjustments do I need to make? I’d like the brake pedal to be responsive like before.
Please help. Thanks in advance.
