韓國銀行23日發行麵額5萬韓元（約合39美元）的紙幣，這是韓國36年來首次發行新麵額紙幣。韓國上次發行大麵額紙幣是在1973年，麵額1萬韓元，也是23日之前韓國最大麵額的紙幣。
這種5萬麵額紙幣還有一個新特征，那就是首次在貨幣上印上女性肖像--16世紀女藝術家申師任堂肖像（朝鮮時代女書畫家，也是著名儒學家李珥的母親），申師任堂以其美德聰慧以及在書法、繪畫、詩歌方麵的傑出造詣成為韓國女性的楷模（見下圖）。
