Japanese auto giant Toyota's joint venture in China plans to introduce plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models in the next two to three years, and is likely to no longer use Toyota's original hybrid model, but may adopt BYD's DM-i technology, reports AutoTech.
Looking at future product plans, there will be about two or three Toyota models that will use DM-i technology. However, there is no further information on whether all these products will be launched as planned. “What is certain is that even with BYD's DM-i technology, Toyota will definitely make new adjustments, and the final driving experience will be different,” an anonymous source from Toyota stated in a report.
Toyota will then describe how it will make a breakthrough in PHEVs, while possibly announcing a significant small super-engine, the report cites a person familiar with the matter. Toyota first tested PHEVs in China earlier than most local Chinese brands but failed to find a balance between dual-motor systems and the market, as well as lower prices, the report states.
Under the pressure of price wars, price is an important factor that Toyota needs to consider. The manufacturer of new energy vehicles (NEV) will launch its fifth-generation hybrid DM technology in May, with low-load fuel consumption dropping to 2.9 liters per 100 kilometers and a vehicle range of up to 2,000 kilometers with a full fuel tank and full charge, said its chairman Wang Chuanfu at an investor conference at the end of March.
It is worth noting that BYD has a strong partnership with Toyota. Toyota and BYD announced on April 2, 2021, that their joint venture, BYD Toyota Electric Vehicle Technology Co Ltd, was officially established. The joint venture is located in Shenzhen and is 50 percent owned by Toyota and 50 percent by BYD.
The main role of this joint venture will be to develop purely electric vehicles, with future new models to be sold through Toyota and BYD channels.
