Q: How many million people died during the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution instigated by the Communist Party of China?

I don’t know where those so-called experts get these estimates in some of the answers here. I was born before the Great Leap Forward, and I lived through both the years of the Great Leap Forward and the Great Cultural Revolution.

My grandparents on my mother's side died of Japanese occupation. My two oldest brothers died as babies during the anti-Japanese war and the civil war. After 1949, none of my family members died unnaturally. My friends, relatives, classmates, and colleagues have more or less the same experience as mine. Chinese people suffered every year during the century of humiliation. We know as our parents know. People died more in war than in peacetime. China has been at peace since 1949.

The Chinese population stagnated from 1840 until 1949. Chinese population growth after 1949. Chinese people are more educated after 1949 than before. Chinese people are healthier after 1949 than before. Chinese people are happier after 1949 than before. The Chinese population doubled during Mao's Era. 

The Great Leap Forward was zealous on production, and achieved a lot in irrigation. Three Years of disaster were partly due to the blockade and sanctions by both superpowers, the US and the Soviet Union, or the blockade by both the East Bloc and the West Bloc. Why does China not follow the West in sanctioning Russia? Because Confucius said, that Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others to do unto you.
