Outgoing President of U.S. Council on Foreign Relations claims U.S. is most profound source of instability worldwide

Richard Haass
2nd July 2023 – (Washington) Richard Haass, the outgoing president of the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations, has claimed that the United States has become the most significant source of instability worldwide. After leading the think-tank for two decades, Haass has concluded that the most significant threat to global security is the United States itself, he told The New York Times. He added that instead of being a reliable anchor in an unpredictable world, the United States has become an uncertain exemplar of democracy.
Haass went on to say that the unraveling of the American political system has resulted in the internal threat surpassing the external threat for the first time in his life. He also expressed his concern that the domestic political situation in the United States has introduced a degree of unpredictability and a lack of reliability that is poisonous for America’s ability to function successfully in the world, making it challenging for allies to rely on the country.
Despite spending most of the past half-century exploring other countries, Haass is now turning his attention inward to explore his own. The question Haass raises is whether America has changed in the long run. He believes that the political situation in the United States has left non-Americans and foreign leaders unsure of what is the norm and what is the exception anymore.
Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, Haass is a veteran of four administrations, including one Democrat and three Republican. His views on the state of American politics and its impact on global security are likely to provoke debate in the years ahead, as policymakers and analysts grapple with the country’s role in the world.
