The dusk has set deeply in the sea, as we drove through the narrow tortuous street along the coast. The sun was fully set, but streaks of pink and orange color lingered on mistily in the sky, adrift with a few clouds. The parking lot was blocked due to the pandemic shelter-in-place order, however the beach is still thronged with people. Young surfers, some naked at the top, hurried to the beach with the surf boards in their hands. To avoid the crowd, we drove deeper into the alley. Parked in front a house, we got off. A dog barked at us from the patio, but it was soon quieted down by the owner. We groped in the dim light for the way to the beach. Hidden in the bush in between two houses is a steep flight of steps, akin to the “thousand-step”, leading us down the cliff.
We stepped over the train tracks and trudged in the soft sand towards the front beach. Seldom we visit the beach at the night, as the darkness renders the sea nothing but black and austere. We did once though, many years ago, when our kids were little, a few families ventured to catch silver fish on the moonlit beach. But tonight we are here for a glimpse of the legendary luminescent blue waves, a natural algae bloom as organism in the ocean emits its light, scientifically termed as bioluminescence dinoflagellates.
As if a blink would make us miss anything, our eyes were open wide, looking here and there for abnormalcy. All we saw were murky waves, loaded with sands lapping onto the beach. I cast my doubtful eyes upon a handful of watchers by the sides, to seek any hints or assurance. They stood in repose. My husband must have sensed my disappointment. He drew me closer and his finger was pointing at the rising waves in the distance. “Watch there, and be patient”, said he. As if his words were a match that ignites a gas stove, after a few failed attempts, the waves finally caught on the fire. The blue light exploded and danced gaily on the rushing waves. Raging on, the fire was transmitted to the sideway waves. It was like a light show that dazzled the night beach, but the glamor only lasted for seconds. It disappeared completely, before new waves put on another show, impulsively.
