2016年元月17日（星期日）《紐約時報》在“紐約地區”本地新聞專欄刊發了很平凡、但又很傳奇的“義務氣象觀測員” Richard G. Hendrickson（1912-2016）的訃文(Obituary)。Richard G. Hendrickson生前是紐約長島的一個地道美國農民(farmer)，可是，他為美國氣象部門義務觀測氣象85年！這位普通美國公民的敬業精神和奉獻精神確實令人欽佩。

1912年9月2日，Richard G. Hendrickson出生在紐約長島的Bridgehampton的“Hendrickson家庭農場” （Bridgehampton，Long Island, N.Y.）。這個農場主要從事家禽和奶牛養殖。Richard G. Hendrickson的祖父和父親都曾在農場勞作。Richard趕上了20世紀20年代末-30年代初的美國經濟“大蕭條”，沒有上大學，而在他家的農場幹農活。

85年前，經Hendrickson家人同意，當地氣象部門在“Hendrickson家庭農場”的私地上設立了一個氣象觀測站（weather observation station）。1930年7月1日，年僅18歲的Richard G. Hendrickson開始擔任義務氣象觀測員。每天早晨8點和晚上8點，他都要進行有關氣象參數的記錄。若遇暴風雨之惡劣天氣，Richard G. Hendrickson每隔15分鍾要進行一次觀測記錄。

早在1890年，美國氣象部門建立了“合作觀測（Cooperative Observers）”網絡。目前，該網絡擁有8700名誌願者，由美國商務部的國家海洋與大氣管理局【National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)，United States Department of Commerce】協調領導。Richard G. Hendrickson生前屬於合作觀測網絡的一個成員。Richard G. Hendrickson一以貫之，連續義務開展氣象觀測長達85年，這是美國氣象發展史上的一個奇跡。

2014年，Richard G. Hendrickson很不情願地退休。

2016年元月9日，Richard G. Hendrickson在紐約Westhampton養老院辭世，享年103歲。

When Richard G. Hendrickson logged his first weather observation for the U.S. Weather Bureau, the precursor to NOAA’s National Weather Service, Herbert Hoover occupied the White House. Since then the Bridgehampton, New York, farmer has filed twice daily reports, tallying more than 150,000 individual weather observations - playing a critical role in building our nation’s climate history.
