人生不相見

這一首杜甫的《贈衛八處士》，辜鴻銘也翻譯過的。竊以為辜譯也有很多不盡如人意處,有些地方貌似也沒比俺強太多 //@@

拙譯：
Seldom in life do we see each other,
Often afar, like star to star.
But tonight, what a night!
We could gather under the candlelight.
Youth and strength so temporary,
Hair and temples already gray.
Old acquaintances, many have passed away!
My heart twinged, my mouth agape.
Twenty years, who’d have imagined to wait,
to be a guest again at your place.
You were unmarried last time I said goodbye;
Now a father of sons and daughters, how time flies!
Some greeted me heartily, asking from where I come;
Others brought me food and wine, while we chatted on and on.
Spring chives presently cut in the night rain;
Brown rice just cooked from fresh grain.
Being together is so not easy, you claim,
10 cups in a row, let us drink away.
10 cups in a row, and I am still sitting straight,
To our lasting friendship and your hospitality.
Tomorrow I leave again, mountains in between;
Nothing to be heard, nowhere to be seen.


附辜譯：
In life,friends seldom are brought near; 人生不相見，
Like stars,each one shines in its sphere. 動如參與商。
To-night,-oh!what a happy night! 今夕複何夕，
We sit beneath the same lamplight. 共此燈燭光。
Our youth and strength last but a day. 少壯能幾時，
You and I –ah!our hairs are grey! 鬢發各已蒼。
Friend! Half are in a better land, 訪舊半為鬼，
With tears we grasp each others hand. 驚呼熱中腸。
Twenty more years,-short,after all, 焉知二十載，
I once again ascend your hall. 重上君子堂。
When we met,you had not a wife; 昔別君未婚，
Now you have children,-such is life! 兒女忽成行。
Beaming，they greet their father’s chum; 怡然敬父執，
They ask me from where I have come. 問我來何方。
Before our say,we each have said, 問答未及已，
The table is already laid. 兒女羅酒漿。
Fresh salads from the garden near, 夜雨剪春韭，
Rice mixed with millet,-frugal cheer. 新炊間黃粱。
When shall we meet?‘tis hard to know. 主稱會麵難，
And so let the wine freely flow. 一舉累十觴。
This wine,I know,will do no harm. 十觴亦不醉，
My old friend’s welcome is so warm. 感子故意長。
To-morrow I go,-to be whirled 明日隔山嶽，
Again into the wide,wide world. 世事兩茫茫。

carpediem同學的意見：
1）參與商are not only far away。參與商是中國古代的星宿名，按照當今天文學的星座劃分，參星是現在的獵戶座，商星是天蠍座。參星在西而商星在東，當一個上升，另一個下沉，永不相見。辜譯sounds closer.

2.your translation of 世事兩茫茫doesn't seem very accurate. A lot of modern Chinese paraphrases read it as "人情世事竟然都如此渺茫".
