Logan at First Sight

If you have watched Veronica Mars Season One all the way through, I dare say you love Logan as much as I do. Who wouldn’t? He’s a character, full of wit, full of passion, never boring, super cool, very brave, and, need I mention it, deadly handsome. But Logan at first sight, let’s be honest, he’s a jackass.
Logan’s first appearance is accompanied by Veronica’s voiceover, “Every school has an obligatory psychotic jackass. He’s ours.” Yes, yes, I know there’s such a thing called “unreliable narrator”: the fact that our heroine thinks he’s a jackass does not necessarily mean he’s really a jackass. We need to use our own eyes to judge. Still…
There are a couple of important scenes of Logan in EP1. The first is his provocative talk to Veronica. When V ignores him, he says the following: “What’s the matter, aren’t you your mother’s daughter? Hmm? Now there was a woman who could drink. Hey, what’s she up to nowadays, maybe she’ll join us. Do you know where she is? Any clue?” Veronica’s mom turns out to be an alcoholic and she split after Keith lost the Sheriff job. My first impression of Logan? Bloody cruel jackass who surely knows how to pinch people’s heart with a few words.
The second important scene is the beach encounter. Veronica kills three or fours birds with one stone, Logan being one of the victim birds. So he carries out a revenge: vandalism of Veronica’s car. Unfortunately all vandalism needs to go through Weevil the PCH leader who just owes V a huge favor. Weevil punches Logan and wants to hear his apology. Here’s what’s quite impressive: the first punch, Logan goes down and says “Rub a lamp”; the second punch, Logan, with blood coming out of his nose, says “Kiss my ass”; Weevil is trying another one but Logan remains defiant. My second impression of him? A violent jackass who’s a bully but interestingly not a coward. So, a jackass shows his layers as early as EP1.
In hindsight, there are already clues in EP1 that Logan is by no means a shallow jackass.
1) He’s sharp. He sees through the alcoholism in Lianne.
2) He’s not a coward.
3) We learnt in flashbacks that he was Lily’s boyfriend. Lily was Veronica’s best friend so she must have had taste, right?
