As usual, we come to the beach for the independence weekend vacation. We do not have any plan and just take it easy.
On the way here yesterday, we stopped by the Amish farm market to grab some freshly home-made doughnuts, piggy in blanket, bread and rolls, salami and cheese (those are food kids love), plus some fresh veggie, fruits and 2 watermelons. Then my younger one baked a blueberry streusel cake using the recipe from the latest issue of Gourmet magazine. The house was filled with the aroma and sweetness of oven fresh cake smell. The freshly baked cake provided such a satisfactory in taste.
Our another Independence weekend routine is to get some hermit crabs for my younger one. She has been having hermit crabs as pets for several years. There were several dramatizing events happened in history while she was having them, including one successfully escaped (could not find him any more), another one escaped several times, but was caught back every time. The worst incident was one year, on Thanksgiving day, it was a warm day so she put her hermit crab outside to get some sun. We went to a friend house for dinner later. When we were back, she realized that she forgot to take the hermit crab in. No matter how she tried, she could not bring the poor thing back to life. She was extremely sad. The sadness lasted for about 2 years. It seems that no hermit crab will live longer than a year in our house. Therefore, we get new ones every year.
It was rather crowded on the board walk, which was expected for the holiday weekend. It was still a bit surprising to see so many people there in that relatively early morning. After strolling down about a half of the board walk and checking a lot of stores there, we found one store had the crabs she likes ---- she does not like painted shells. Carefully, she picked three of them this time. On the way back to house, she was so excited and kept talking to her new pets. I could feel her happiness. I won’t concern or think how long those hermit crabs will be with them (she said she would bring them to the dorm when she goes to college in fall). I am happy when my baby is happy.
