莎士比亞十四行詩第一首

FROM fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:
But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light'st flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.
Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content
And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.
Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

莎士比亞的十四行詩集，一共有154首，其中第1首到第126首是獻給一個朋友的，第127首到152首是寫給一個黑女郎的。這154首是在1609年發表的，咱們首先看一下第一首。14行詩就是一14行，每一行都有十個音節，整個的十四行詩都是以abab cdcd efef gg這個韻腳方式來排列的。
首先看第一行：

FROM fairest creatures we desire increase,

從 第一句開始 “fairest” 意思就是最漂亮的，creatures意思就是活著的（living things），不僅僅是動物，指所有活著的(not just animals)，increase是繁（procreation,reproduction）即是指下一代。這句話的意思是說我們要最美麗的生物不斷的 繁殖下去。

That thereby beauty's rose might never die,

第二句的第一個字是that，這個that的意思是so that，thereby就是through increase的意思，rose是指玫瑰，意思是說通過繁殖美麗的花朵才不會凋謝。

But as the riper should by time decease,

第三句 the riper是指成熟的果實，而by time是指到了時候，意思是說成熟的東西到了一定時候都不免於謝世。

His tender heir might bear his memory:

第四句 his是指他的朋友是位男性，tender是指年輕的（young，soft）bear his memory的意思就是指繼續他的記憶（carry on his memory，bear his resemblance）也就是說看到他的子女，可以聯想到他。

But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,

第五句 contracted 這個意思是指訂婚的意思（betrothed），這句話就是說你和你的明亮的眼睛訂了婚。

Feed'st thy light'st flame with self-substantial fuel,

第六句中的self-substantial fuel 就是等於 fuel of your own substance 也就是說把自己的身體作為顏料，用自己身體作為燃料來燃燒你生命中的火焰，

Making a famine where abundance lies,

第七句中 famine就是饑荒的意思，意思就是說在豐收的地方造成了饑荒，也就是說自己太迷戀自己的容貌，沒有把真正的美傳下去。

Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.

第八句 foe是指敵人的意思，意思是說你自己是自己的敵人，對自己太殘酷了，

Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament

第九句中fresh 就是指年輕的可愛的youthful, lovely，ornament 就是裝飾品。

And only herald to the gaudy spring,

第十句的only就是unique, peerless，而herald to 就是 messenger of，gaudy = delightful, showy 意思就是說你是這個世界上年輕漂亮的裝飾品。你是燦爛春天的無比的先驅者，也就是說你是唯一能為美麗春天開路的人。

Within thine own bud buriest thy content

第十一句中的bud = unopened flower, young man；content: 1. seed (offpsring that a future father contains); 2. happiness (of marriage)意思就是說你把你自己的幸福和子孫埋葬到了花蕊裏麵。

And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.

第十二句 churl: 1. boor, 2. miser makest waste in niggarding=destroys in miserliness這個意思就是說不讓別人擁有，因為吝嗇而糟蹋了自己。 niggarding = acting niggardly（吝嗇）整句話的意思就是說溫柔的吝嗇鬼你不讓別人擁有你的美麗，其實就是糟蹋自己。

Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

第十三句和第十四句 or else 是否則的意思，glutton就是貪夫，due = duty, debt這句話的意思就是說可憐這個世界吧 ，要不然你就成了貪夫！你和你的墳墓就把世界的債吞噬掉。（你欠的世界的債就是你的子女。）
