KWANGTUNG SUFFERS SERIOUS REVERSE
Defection of Generals

LONDON. July 14.

As a result of the defection or several subordinate generals in Kwnngtung the influence of General Chen Chi-tang the Canton leader has greatly declined according to tin Nanking correspondent of The Times. This has given the Nanking Government an opportunity to tackle the situation there with a firmness which has hitherto not been shown for Tear or precipitating a renewal of civil strife.

The Kuomintang executive committee took the bull by the horns in appointing General Yu Han-mou who came to Nanking from Canton last week against the wishes of his superior officer, as pacification commissioner for Kwangtung thereby virtually superseding Chen Chi-tang Simultaneously the southwest political council and the south west branch of the Kuomintang were abolished thus ending the semi-independent Government at Canton.

While Kwangtung s opposition to the Central Government has broken down it does not follow that Kwangsi will come to heel This province however will now stand alone if its leaders continue to be recalcitrant It is expected that the Central Government will in due course enforce its authority there.

The Hong Kong correspondent of the Dally Telegraph says that 10 000 troops had rebelled in the province of Kwangsi and are now moving toward Canton to defend South China from attacks by Nanking. Large forces are moving toward a flash that may decide the fate of Canton.

A message from the Japanese news agency at Shanghai states that General Chen Chi-tang has ordered his troops to attack the forces of General Yu Hnn-mou. Military leaders in South China are answering Nanking’s drastic decisions with defiance.

From Canton it is reported that a joint session of the south west political and executive councils elected Chen Chi-tang commander in chief of the Kwangsi and Kwangtung armies. He will direct the resistance of Cantonese forces to the Nanking armies.
