Clergy will hold prayer service for rain

Leaders of three congregations in downtown Snellville will join together Monday to ask God to bless the metro area with rain.
The Revs. Richard Hunter of Snellville United Methodist Church, Rusty Newman of First Baptist Church Snellville and Mike Garrett of Westminster Presbyterian Church will co-host a community-wide prayer service from noon to 12:30 p.m. Monday.
The service will be held at First Baptist Church at 2400 E. Main St.
We think it\'s necessary to come together to pray for God\'s guidance and to ask for him to bless us with rain, Hunter said. We put the word out all over the community.
The pastors will make remarks at the service before the prayer begins.
Hunter said he will look to the Gospel of Matthew for inspiration. A verse there reminds believers that the Lord is faithful and just ... he hears us when we pray.
We do believe that when we ask the Lord he will bless us, said Hunter. He will either send rain or give us insight on how to use the water he has already given us.
Monday\'s prayer service for rain will be similar to one organized recently by Gov. Sonny Perdue, which attracted 250 people outside the capitol building.
Hunter said he and his co-hosts had the idea for the service before Perdue asked for divine intervention to provide relief from the drought. The church leaders are uncertain how many people will show up Monday with hands folded and heads bowed.
The three churches have a combined congregation of several thousands.
Hunter said he asks those who cannot attend to pray wherever they are Monday.
We hope it will lead to more and more prayers at other churches, people\'s homes and the community, said Hunter.
