我的 Ballroom Dancing 經曆（1）

我開始 Ballroom Dancing 是在 1998 年搬到北加州後。原來在東部時，常去室內遊泳館。我父親從我五歲時就開始了對我的遊泳訓練，這也使我上大學時能被選入校隊。也許因為加州天氣好，很難找到室內遊泳館。正琢磨著該做什麽運動呢，偶然看到一篇文章說 Ballroom Dancing 正在申請奧運資格，叫做 Dance Sport 。心想在國內上學時曾是班上的 Ballroom Dancing 主力，再加上從小的體操，舞蹈，和運動訓練基礎，雖沒有參加奧運的指望，但也可能達到不錯的水平吧。於是，拽著一位女友一起參加了當地 Ballroom Dance Studio 舉辦的 Party。這才發現，他們跳的我是一點譜都沒有。湊合著跳完了Party ，信心頓失。

一個多星期過後，我決定找個 Studio 去上課。翻開 Yellow Page, Arthur Murray 的廣告最大。於是就去了 Arthur Murray 。

在美國有兩家連鎖舞廳: Arthur Murray 和 Fred Astaire。這兩家以美式社交舞為主，有標準課程設置。主要分 Smooth, Rhythm, and Night Club Dance 三類。每一類中又分不同級別： Bronze 1, 2, 3; Silver 1, 2, 3; Gold 1, 2, 3; and Open 。每一級別中都有標準規定動作。課程 package 中包括單個輔導，group lessons, 和 practice parties. Arthur Murray 的私人輔導課很貴，但它的 group lessons 和 practice parties 是免費的。對初學者來說，得勤學多練，group lessons 和 practice parties 挺重要的。所以，整個 package 還是合算的。學生進級考試要由 Arthur Murray 本 studio 之外的資深裁判來評判。技術要求挺嚴格的。對每個 pattern 都要考單個和配合動作兩部份。

我在 Arthur Murray 有幸遇到 one of the best professional dancer in the chain. 他是 Arthur Murray 連續五年職業全能冠軍保持者。學習半年後，過了 Bronze 3 考試，我就跳到 Fred Astaire 了，因為他們給了我更好的 package 和 chain 之外比賽的機會。又過半年，我的 American Smooth 進到了 Open level. 在那裏我有幸受教於英國來的 Nigel Clark. 他曾是 Blackpool 的少年冠軍，是 Heather Smith 在英國的最後一個舞伴。 Heather 來美後與 Victor Veyrasset 搭伴，曾連續五年獲全美 Professional International Standard 冠軍。我是 Nigel 唯一願意提供單個輔導的學生。他是 Studio 請來做定期教師陪訓和裁判的。我的進展挺快。這與我的投入也有關。下麵是我第一次參加 American Smooth Open Scholarship 比賽時的照片。

沒有怎麽跳－－我現在是處在＂三無＂狀態：無時間（有兩個小家夥要照顧）、無教練（主教練告老還鄉了）、無舞伴（沒有固定時間練舞，當然就沒人願意當舞伴啦）。 ：＂（

回複Flamenco_Girl的評論: 實際上，我是把故事簡化了一點。：） 其實在那個晚上之前我已經在一個學校的 ballroom dance club 那兒學了一點點 American style。不過那個 club 很小，隻有幾對 couples （說來我還是那個 club 的“元老”之一，哈）。學的也不是很多。所以才有那天晚上的突然發心要找老師好好學跳舞。

我後來離開 Arthur Murray 時還有5、6節課沒有用完。但當時不知道可以要回錢來。後來在另外一個州時，我的一個 partner 在那兒的一個 Arthur Murray studio 找到一位很好的老師（哈，還是回到 Arthur Murray!)。他願意收我們當他的“後麵”學生（就是不成為正式的 studio 的學生）。我原來想讓這位老師把我在第一個 Arthur Murray studio 的 credit 轉過去，但他們死也不肯。

那位老師很不錯。他也是從英國來的，跟 Andrew Sinkinson 等人是buddies。隻可惜我認識他時太晚了。幾個月後我就離開那個州了。:(

Hey 海鷗, it's interesting to know that we started the same way - yellow page and Arthur Murray. I can understand what you are talking about. Arthur Murray is a franchised company, it can be quite different for each individual one. They do have a reputation of being a "money machine". My initial teach was also a just OK guy. After 4 or 5 leasons, I did a dance show with him in Studio. Then I became a hot commodity for teachers. Sure, I went for the best they offered.

They should give you refund if you decide to quit the program any time, this is stated in the contract, at least when I was there.

After you have built the foundation, you can build your own training plan. It usually helps by going for the best in the area. Most likely, they are independent. Me too, have been going to independent coaches after the 1st year.

寫得不錯。讀來很有意思。你很幸運能遇到好老師。我就沒有那麽幸運了。

我也是從 Arthur Murray 開始的 －－ 那天晚上突然覺得腳癢，想跳舞，就從黃頁裏找 studio 打。晚上十點半，還有誰接電話呢？打了七八個沒人接的電話後，終於有人接了，那是個 Arthur Murray studio。 ：）

後來我發現，那是個 money making machine －－ 我勤勤奮奮地學舞、練舞、交錢，結果是到今天為止（離開那裏時，我在那兒待了快一年了），我在那裏的 record 是僅僅通過了 Bronze １ 的考試。；） LOL！

在我去的那家 Arthur Murray studio， Bronze 是分四個 levels 的（不知道為什麽？）。不過我的運氣不夠好，我的第一個老師是一個新手，大概比我懂多一兩步而已。 ：（ 後來我不高興了，同時跑到另外一個教 International style 的 studio 去，才學了幾個月，我在 Arthur Murray 的（第二個）老師就覺得不對勁，翻著我的記錄說：＂We didn't teach this, we didn't teach that... But you have known them all. All I have left are variations.＂ 我嚇得不敢吭聲。後來她的一個得意門生在一個 party 上向我刺探情報，我就都老實告訴他了。然後我跟那個 Arthur Murray studio 就隻剩下表麵上客客氣氣的幾個月了。
