As Mexico prepares to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the country is looking back to one of the oldest team sports, dating back 3,400 years: an ancient ball game known as ulama.

This ceremonial sport was nearly wiped out during the Spanish conquest, surviving only in remote areas of northwestern Mexico until it was revived in the late 20th century.
