我可不是老古董，對進步事物總是拍手稱快。不過，最近有人建議，把我們家附近的一個公園推掉，蓋個超市。這我可不讚成。好在，市政委員會的一名代表跟我的想法一樣。他正在竭盡全力設法推翻這項提案。這倒讓我想起了今天要學的習慣用語，叫，go to the mat.

Mat是腳墊，地板墊的意思，to go to the mat意思是不遺餘力，設法解決難題，往往是為了那些無權無勢的小人物的利益。就好像剛才說到的，我們地區的那位市政議員努力說服其他人，不要拆掉我們附近的公園。I'm so thankful that he's been willing to go to the mat for my neighborhood. 他能為我們這個居民區搖旗呐喊，據理力爭，真讓我感動。

在下麵這個例子中，上司的支持讓一名雇員感激涕零。我們一起聽聽他是怎麽說的。

例句-1：When I told my supervisor that I was going to be let go, she marched into the president's office to defend me. Apparently, she told him that the company couldn't afford to lose one of its most valuable employees. If she hadn't gone to the mat for me, I wouldn't still be here.

這個人說：我告訴上司說，公司要解雇我，她馬上找到總裁，為我進行辯護。顯然，她告訴總裁說，公司不能失去象我這樣最有價值的雇員。要不是她挺身而出，替我說話，我今天早不在這兒了。

有這麽個替自己撐腰的上司，可真夠幸運的。這倒讓我想起我的一個高中同學，他後來在一個大學裏當係主任。那所大學裏很多有學習障礙的學生多年來一直抱怨說，他們得不到應有的幫助。直到我的這位同學當上係主任，他們的問題才得到了解決，She went to the mat for them. 給他們爭取到了各種各樣的幫助。

很顯然，每個社會裏都有不少需要別人代言的群體。讓我們一起聽聽下麵這個例子。

例句-2：What happens to the poor and sick who need to see a doctor? Fortunately, one of my favorite charities is gone to the mat for these needy people. It's a clinic that travels across the U.S. to provide thousands with free medical services. Because of its staff of volunteer health care professionals and donated supplies, there's a little less suffering in the country.

這個人說：那些沒錢看病的窮人該怎麽辦呢？幸運的是，我們最喜歡的一個慈善機構正在向這批人伸出援手。他們出資辦的一個流動診所到美國各地去，給數以千計的人免費看病。診所裏不求報酬的醫務工作者和社會各方捐獻的醫療設備，讓我們這個國家減少了一分病痛。

真巧，我最近剛剛在電視上看過這個流動診所創辦人的人物介紹。這個人真是太了不起了。正是因為這種人的存在，社會上需要幫助的人才有了希望。

也許你能猜到， go to the mat這個習慣用語是從摔跤比賽來的，指把對手摁在墊子上，最早的使用可以追溯到二十世紀初。
