What was designed for Ukraine by better politicians like Henry Kissinger as a buffer between or a bridge connecting the east and the west should have been for Russia. Again, Russia is a western country, and the Russians think that way too. But now, the core west has lost Russia likely permanently. Russia will be from now and on a perpetually unsettling factor within the western world. Which is in fact good for China and the rest of the world that has suffered the west long enough.
Russia is now forced to search for its own identity. I suspect that the renewal of the so-called pan slavism is a response to this. Half pride, half bitterness, it isn't necessarily so scary, but this is just my guess.
The west could have absorbed Russia into its power zone and exerts enormous pressure on China and gives China a severe and hardly curable headache.
