This is a modern chorus interpretation of one of the greatest Chinese classical poems. It contains a prelude and three principal sections to portray the three stages of life as presented in Jiang Jie's Yu Mei Ren. (ZT)
• Prelude: Groups of sixteen notes played in soft staccato creates the atmosphere of incessant raindrops. Singings of "listening to the rain" reveal the theme of the song.
• Section 1: Male and female antiphonal singings depict the innocence of the younger years, which is followed by a SATB chorus to symbolize the romances of those bygone days.
• Section 2: After a modulated interlude, all parts sing in canon to portray the wandering hardships of making a living in mid-life.
• Section 3: Slower tempos and strongly contrasting dynamics reflect the laments of the final years. At the end, the melody closes with a slowly fading chorus to bury the endless sorrows into an unceasing rain.
