"Good for you" can have many different connotations

There are sincere uses of the phrase; for example, if a child was to tell his mother that he received an A on a test, his mother may sincerely say "good for you", which carries with it a sense of pride and encouragement.

However, "good for you" can also be used sarcastically. Often, this occurs when someone reports an accomplishment that the object of the report does not care about. For example, if that same child were to say to his mother that he caught a Pokemon, and if his mother were to not care about video games, she may say "good to you" in an attempt to quickly end the conversation. The sarcastic use of "good for you" is also frequently utilized by grumpy people. If that child were to say to his mother that he received an A on a test, and if his mother was at that time suffering from menopause, his mother might angrily reply "good for you" in an attempt to demean the child and belittle his accomplishment.
