Doubt is the beginning not the end of wisdom
This is a quote from George Iles, 1852-1942. He wrote about science, among other practical stuff, as well as an autobiography.
In the context of science, that quote says to me that knowledge begins with not knowing, not understanding, being unsure. But you have to go beyond that. You have to seek the knowledge that you don’t have.
Evolution began with doubting creation. The Copernican system began with doubting the Ptolemaic epicycles. Relativity began with doubting the existence of the luminiferous ether. And so on.
