APAD:every man for himself

every man for himself

—used to describe a situation in which people do not help each other and each person has to take care of himself or herself

As soon as there was a crisis, it was every man for himself.
 

1.(nautical)A command, issued in case of shipwreck, that crew members are relieved of all duties and should try to save themselves.
2. (figurative) An expression of indifference, describing or advocating selfishness, lack of comradeship etc.
