Rise vs Raise vs Arise vs Rice

Rise as a verb usually means ‘go up/come up’. It is an intransitive verb, which means you don’t need to add objectives after it.

Raise as verb has several different uses, but the main thing to remember here is that someone or something makes something increase or move up. It is a transitive verb, so you have to raise something. 

He raised his family in countryside.

Rise & raise as nouns 

In UK English, a rise is an increase in someone’s salary.  

Steve was given a rise by his boss. 

But in US English (sometimes also in UK English) a raise is used. 

The secretary was given a 5% raise after performing well. 

 

Arise usually follows abstract nouns (concepts or ideas), rather than concrete nouns (people, places). It means ‘to begin to exist’.
