I have to admit that I used to think English is a very straightforward language without the subtle meaning behind the words until I encountered this song , a very gentle way to express deep sadness and regret for love lost. My heart broke while I was listening to it and this song reminded me of another song 《我終於失去了你》. They both convey the same feeling, albeit the way singers expressed it differently. All of sudden, the vibrations of two songs echoed and merged with each other and the best translation of “let her go” is ”我終於失去了你”. I think the lesson both singers can learn or we all can learn is “勸君莫惜金縷衣,勸君惜取少年時。花開堪折直須折,莫待無花空折枝。”
P.S. I rushed to make this piece to meet the deadline. I would like to call for the translation for the ancient peom:
勸君莫惜金縷衣,勸君惜取少年時。花開堪折直須折,莫待無花空折枝。
Let her go
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go
Hoping one day you'll make a dream last
But dreams come slow, and they go so fast
Maybe one day, you'll understand why
Everything you touch surely dies
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go
