It ain't over till the fat lady sings.是個比較口語化的表達，意思是： Nothing is irreversible until the final act is played out.
It is not over yet. 尚未成定局，結果難料。
這是個很流行的表達法，昨晚在電影Independent Day裏再次聽到。今早來公司，還問了問對麵的美國同事，測試一下到底有多popular。看來是很常用的。
這個表達, 有人說，是源於德國十九世紀Richard Wagner's音樂歌劇Ring Cycle裏的一個熟悉角色，名叫Brunnhilde，常常由胖胖女子扮演，在最後十幾分鍾或近二十分鍾裏壓軸獨唱(歌劇很長，長達14多個小時)。所以， 'When the fat lady sings' is a reasonable answer to the question 'when will it be over?'
但也有人說，不是這個典故，因為，印刷的文字記載表明是從1970s開始出現的, 源於一個叫Dan Cook的體育解說員， 在德州體育比賽時說的一句話“ The opera ain't over till the fat lady sings", 而廣為流傳的。
Anyway, 在講述上述故事後，這個表達的意思就顯而易見了。相似的表達有：
