這是個很流行的表達法,昨晚在電影Independent Day裏再次聽到。今早來公司,還問了問對麵的美國同事,測試一下到底有多popular。看來是很常用的。
這個表達, 有人說,是源於德國十九世紀Richard Wagner's音樂歌劇Ring Cycle裏的一個熟悉角色,名叫Brunnhilde,常常由胖胖女子扮演,在最後十幾分鍾或近二十分鍾裏壓軸獨唱(歌劇很長,長達14多個小時)。所以, 'When the fat lady sings' is a reasonable answer to the question 'when will it be over?'
但也有人說,不是這個典故,因為,印刷的文字記載表明是從1970s開始出現的, 源於一個叫Dan Cook的體育解說員, 在德州體育比賽時說的一句話“ The opera ain't over till the fat lady sings", 而廣為流傳的。
