My intention is that there are only two developmental states of the event: play in the group at the beginning and only two of us left in the end. But if it is confusing, I will think of rephrasing it.
I prefer use “Are” to tell the readers by the time I am writing it, I am still not sure if we were not in love back then or we are actually in love all these years. Confusing, isn’t it? Throughout the whole story, the writer’s state of mind is confused. In novels, those mind activities are usually in italics. Maybe in italics?
