Wednesday's terse statement by the government's Religious Affairs department came in response to the Holy See's denunciation last week of the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association, which elected a new leader during its assembly. China's official Catholic Church does recognize the pope's authority.
The Vatican says the bishops, priests and lay people who attended the conference were forced to attend the event. It says the assembly represented Beijing's "persistent desire to control the most intimate area of citizens' lives."
