My roofing co. owner A had a helper B. B was introduced to me by A on site in Sep. 2009. Yesterday (01-18-2011) B came to my house and said he has not been paid by A for 4.8k materials purchasing. He has sued A as a criminal case. But A said he was not paid by me and other clients. So he needs the proof from me. These are all told by B first time and I never heard it before. Even we have met twice. Another time was one month after roofing he asked by me to check the quality when A was not reachable.
So my question is should I show my proof that I had paid A? Of course I have bank record and the signature with "paid in full $xx,xxx" on the receipt.
The reason of NO: 1) Because I don't know the whole story. 2) I should have no relationship with B. It should be between A and I if there had been any dispute.
The reason of YES: 1) A helped me to have a new quote of hale damage against insurance's insufficient estimate at beginning. Insurance co. sent first and second checks to me. The amount is bigger than roofing fixing. A is a roofing company only. He promised me orally to continue do the rest part with the subcontractor. By then he was having a tough children custody case with his EX. He was not hiding to others about it as his explanation of not answering. So I guess he can't pay enough attention on business. Then he disappeared and never answered the phone or email again. So far I have not fixed the damage completely except the roof and some gutter. 2) B as a accounting helper probably knew it. 3) By impression B looks more honest than A. For sympathy B paid material for two houses and did not get a penny from A but it just based on the story told.
I feel something wrong in this story: A owns a company for years why need B to pay for the materials? What if court requests me to present to prove. It would be mandatory or I can chose not go.
Thank you for help.
