High levels of ketones in the urine, or ketonuria, is usually a sign of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The body produces ketones when it burns fat for fuel. DKA is a severe complication of diabetes that can cause fatigue and nausea and may damage vital organs. Untreated DKA can be fatal.

Having some ketones in your urine is normal. But high ketone levels in urine may be a sign that your body is too acidic.
