1000 hours to Indian style fluency

When Trump won the Republic nominee in 2016, he was deeply worried.
He hadn’t expected he could be the nominee. He worried about losing to Hillary in a too large margin.

Then Steve Bannon showed him a path. His mood changed from pessimistic to optimistic. And this led to his historic victory.

For anyone, at any moment, whether he could see a path to success is crucial.

Chinese Americans are facing unprecedented challenges.

They are losing out to Indian in IT industry. This reminds me of the 1990s. When computer superstores such as a computer USA arose, many Chinese owned computer repair stores went under.

Going back to China is not the right path. Age discrimination, reverse culture shock, family separation are all insurmountable obstacles.

The path is to compete with Indians head to head. Chinese Americans need to speak English as well as Indians. Chinese need to have as much business knowledge as Indians.

The question is: is it possible for China educated college graduates to speak as well as Indians? If so, how long does it take?

From friends and colleagues, I observe many successful cases. So for the first question, the question is yes.

The second question is more difficult. According to the author of “Outliers”, it take 10,000 hours is be a real expert in any field. That’s 20 hours a week, ten years in total.

This would frustrate many Chinese. Many of them simply couldn’t invest so much time.

But wait, 10,000 is enable you to speak like a news anchor. But our objective is only to speak as well as Indians. So it is about one third of the effort. Further more, many Chinese Americans have accumulated lots of techniques to learn spoken English. If you follow the right technique, it could further reduce the time to 1000 hours.

1000 hours to Indian style fluency, that’s the path for Chinese who come to US to seek better opportunities after college graduation.
