noworry's approach only works for a good boss or a boss that you also establish a personal relationship with. One thing for sure, your career is yours to manage. Understand your your business, your group's value to the business, and your boss' aspiration. Let him know (how to do it subtly is the key) advancing your career will also advance his career.
